Immigration Relief for Immigrant Victims
What is VAWA?
The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) allows victims of battery or extreme cruelty to gain legal immigration status without relying on abusive family members to apply for adjustment of status. People may qualify for VAWA if their abuser/perpetrator is:
- A U.S. citizen spouse or former spouse;
- A U.S. citizen parent;
- A U.S. citizen son or daughter;
- A lawful permanent resident (LPR) spouse or former spouse; or
- An LPR parent.
VAWA is a self-petition but should be done with the assistance of an attorney. Petitioners may also qualify for lawful permanent residence (green card).
